Prayer: Prayer Leads To Spiritual Growth

Series Summary

One of the greatest tools we have in our spiritual arsenal is the ability to pray to a Father in Heaven who is willing to listen to us. And yet, many Christians don't seem to know how to pray, or even why to pray. Sometimes, we neglect this incredible opportunity, and we continue to operate by our own strength... which doesn't work well, or for long. The Bible has a lot to say about the topic of prayer: why it's so important, what to pray for, how to pray effectively, and so much more. In this series, we'll dig into some of those passages and learn more about prayer... so that we can pray better.

Sermon Summary

Spiritual growth doesn't happen by accident. If we want to grow in our faith, it requires intentional care. We can incorporate all kinds of habits and activities into our lives, but without a consistent connection to God, our spiritual lives can become stagnant. Prayer is one of the primary ways we foster that connection. It is more than presenting God with a list of requests; it is an opportunity to draw near to him, align our hearts with his will, and allow him to shape us into the people he created us to be. In Philippians 1:9–11, Paul offers a beautiful example of praying for spiritual maturity. His concern isn't simply that the Philippians would experience easier circumstances or fewer difficulties. Instead, he wants their relationship with Christ to deepen and their lives to reflect God's character. This reminds us that prayer isn't always about changing what's happening around us. Often, God uses prayer to change what's happening within us. As we spend time in his presence, our priorities begin to shift, our attitudes change, and our desires become more like his. The more we seek God, the more we begin to see everything in life through his eyes. Paul's instruction to "pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians 5:17) reminds us that prayer isn't meant to be confined to a particular time or place. It is an ongoing conversation with our heavenly Father, woven into the ordinary moments of everyday life. What might seem to be small moments of connection cultivate a deeper dependence upon him. And over time, that dependence produces lasting spiritual growth. The goal of prayer isn't simply to get more from God, but to grow closer to God and become more like Christ.
