Series Summary
One of the greatest tools we have in our spiritual arsenal is the ability to pray to a Father in Heaven who is willing to listen to us. And yet, many Christians don't seem to know how to pray, or even why to pray. Sometimes, we neglect this incredible opportunity, and we continue to operate by our own strength... which doesn't work well, or for long. The Bible has a lot to say about the topic of prayer: why it's so important, what to pray for, how to pray effectively, and so much more. In this series, we'll dig into some of those passages and learn more about prayer... so that we can pray better.
Sermon Summary
Paul and Silas had every reason to pray. They had been beaten and thrown into prison — not exactly the circumstances anyone would consider ideal for a prayer meeting. Yet at midnight, they were praying and singing hymns to God. Their circumstances had not changed, but their confidence in God had. Prayer reminded them that their situation was not outside God’s reach. Sometimes prayer changes what is happening around us; other times, it changes what is happening within us. Either way, prayer keeps our hearts anchored to the one who is greater than our circumstances.
Then God opened the prison doors. But what seems most amazing in this story is that Paul and Silas stayed. They did not see an opportunity to escape; they saw an opportunity to serve. Their suffering became a doorway for someone else to encounter Jesus. From their example, their jailer asked, “What must I do to be saved?” And then he and his entire household encountered Jesus. God can use the doors we wish had never been closed to create opportunities we never could have imagined.
Whatever door you might be facing in your own life, bring it to God in prayer. You might be asking him to open the door, but he might also choose to use you right where you are. Pray anyway. Pray with confidence, and trust him with the outcome. Because sometimes the greatest answer to prayer isn't simply an open door — it is seeing what God wants to do on the other side of it.
